For my Mac friends:

Watch the video on how to perform routine maintenance:

Free online storage:

Dropbox:

I have been using Dropbox for a while and have 24 gig of free storage.  I invite my students each semester or have one of them invite the their classmate so they can get more storage.  The syncing app works great.  New accounts start with 2 gig of storage.

A new player in the cloud storage is called Copy.  New account starts with 15 gig of storage and 5 gig is added when you invite a friend and they accept.  The friend gets an addition 5 gig too when they accept the invitation to a new account.  Has a nice syncing feature much like Dropbox.

One drive functions much like Google Drive starting with 7 gig of storage and the web version of MS Office is available.  I have found this to be less stable with files not opening and getting an error message from MS.  This has a syncing app that works well.

Google Drive

Google Drive starts with 15 gig of storage with all the Google tools for docs, presentations, forms and more.  There is a syncing feature too.  The best part of Google is the integration with Gmail and the sharing and collaboration features are the best.

Warning:

Using multiple cloud storage can be confusing.  Remembering where you store files can be a challenge.

  •  Use one service for personal and use the other for business
  •  Get a second Google account for business use.

Parallels for iPad

Parallels for iPad works fine.  Was a little latent compared to other products doing the same thing.  I like Splashtop Whiteboard better.  Splashtop is only $9.99 and the Whiteboard addition is $19.95.  Parallels is $79.00 a year as it looks like it connects through one of their servers to talk to your computers from anywhere.  Not sure this is necessary.

Good article about Parallels from Mashable.

Got my Chromecast and have been using it with my MAC and Windows 8 computers.  The MAC work far better.  With the Windows 8 there was a lot of lag on the video.  The MAC shows smoothly and in sync on the TV.  Will be trying with a Windows 7 machine and Chromebook this week.  Will report findings.

Summer Conferences

Had the privilege to present at Campus Technology Conference in Boston and Educators Changing the World Conference at Monte Vista Christian School in California.

Campus Technology was great.  The best keynote speaker was Kyle Bowen of from Purdue University.

ECWC had Sir Ken Robinson, Alan November, Kevin Honeycutt, Mark Barnes, and many more.  I was honored to be part of this line-up.

CT Conference is higher ed folks and ECWC is focused on K-12 but very similar needs.  Faculty and teachers are hungry to integrate technology in their practices.  Some of the hurdles I heard about was the lack of professional development, support, funding, and over controlling tech directors.  I believe it is the time educational technology professionals to call for a change in how decisions are made.  Network people are a vital resource but have no clue as to what teachers need in the classroom.  Make the network and access to resources easy.  Too many hoops and blocked sites are discouraging the use of technology in the classroom.  Time for change!
